Follow the Decharacterization Process
We have begun the decharacterization process of one of our tailings dams – B2 Tico-Tico, located in the municipality of Igarapé.
What Is
Dam Decharacterization?
Decharacterization is the permanent deactivation process of a mining tailings dam, ensuring it no longer poses risks to the environment or public safety. This means the structure permanently loses its dam characteristics.
Geotechnical Assessment:
Assessment of the dam’s current condition and development of a detailed, regulator-approved deactivation plan, overseen by authorities such as ANM, MPMG, and FEAM.
Tailings Removal:
Reservoir drainage, tailings removal, and stabilization of the dam shoulders.
Environmental Restoration:
Restoration of vegetation and soil stabilization in the affected area.
Follow the Decharacterization Process
We have initiated the decharacterization of one of our tailings dams – B2 Tico-Tico, in the municipality of Igarapé.
Why Are We Decharacterizing the Dam?
In compliance with Law No. 23.291, dated February 25, 2019, which establishes the State Dam Safety Policy, we are required to decharacterize inactive upstream-raised tailings containment dams.
Where Will the Tailings Go?
The tailings will be disposed of dry (without water) in areas that are geotechnically and environmentally controlled. These areas, known as PDER (Waste and Tailings Piles), are designed to ensure increased safety and environmental integration.
Is the Process Safe?
Yes. Safety is our top priority throughout the decharacterization process. We rely on stability declarations issued by specialized companies, confirming that the current condition of the dam and its structures is stable and suitable for decharacterization.
When Did We Start and When Will It Be Completed?
The decharacterization process of the B2 Tico-Tico tailings dam began in July 2024 and is expected to be completed by 2027. The decharacterization of the Auxiliary B1 dam in Igarapé and the B1 Ipê dam in Brumadinho will begin in 2025. All of our tailings dams will be fully decharacterized by 2029.
